Australia’s 1st Ever Indigenous Women’s Cricket Team Is Touring India Soon

HUGE win for Aboriginal women being represented in sport – Australia’s first national Indigenous women’s cricket team has been selected for a massive tour of India in May.
The side will be captained by Sydney Sixers’ teenager Ashleigh Gardner (pictured), and 19-year-old Sally Moylan is vice captain. Former ICC ‘Women’s Cricketer of the Year’ Shelley Nitschke has been named as coach.

Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland says this has come just as both Indigenous and female participation in cricket is booming:

“Indigenous cricket participation has hit a record 26,000 participants and female participation – as cricket’s fastest growing area – is also at record numbers of 290,000.”

The squad of 14 be playing majority of the matches against other women’s teams (two 50-over matches and four Twenty20 games), but will also play two matches against men’s sides.

The team will travel to Delhi and Mumbai from May 20 this year.
