Aussie Tennis Star Alex De Minaur Forced Out Of Tokyo 2021 After Testing Positive To COVID-19

Aussie tennis star Alex de Minaur is out of the Tokyo Olympics, after testing positive to COVID-19. ‘Devastated’ is probably under-selling how he feels right now.

The World No. 17 was due to arrive in Tokyo in the next few days, but returned a positive result in his pre-departure tests, the Australian Olympic Commission chef de mission Ian Chesterman confirmed.

“We have been advised that Alex de Minaur has had a positive test, at his mandatory 96-hour, and 72-hour pre-departure tests,” Chesterman said in a statement.

“As a consequence, sadly, Alex will be unable to join the Australian team here in Tokyo.

“We’re very disappointed for Alex, he’s said that he’s shattered [at] not being able to come.

“It’s been a dream since he was a child to represent Australia at the Olympic Games, but he has sent his very best wishes for the rest of the team.”

According to reports, he tested negative on July 5 after leaving the Wimbledon bubble, but tested positive on Saturday.

“All other Australian players have tested negative since,” Chesterman said.

“We look forward to welcoming those athletes into our team.”

More to come.
