Love it or hate it, the 2017 Melbourne Cup is over. Folks, your winner is Rekindling.

The three-year-old, piloted by Corey Brown, cleared well ahead of Johannes Vermeer and Max Dynamite in second and third place. Rekindling blasted ahead at the last stretch to take it home.

The Irish horse is the first three-year-old winner since the 1940s.

“I can’t believe it,” jockey Corey Brown said. “Oh honestly, I chased the ride about six weeks ago and with a light weight [thinking I was] a big chance to get on him.

“I can’t believe it. I have been back here from overseas about nine months and slowly and surely getting back to where I was. Mate, again I can’t believe it.”

This makes it owner Lloyd Williams‘ sixth Cup win in 36 years.
