PREACH: Tove Lo Reckons It’s “Old & Boring” To Expect Girls To Be Perfect Role Models

Tove Lo Interview

I could listen to Tove Lo speak for the rest of my life and never tire of it.

I don’t care if she’s belting out a medley of her hits or reading an Aldi catalogue from front to back, I’m all in.

During Jack Colquhoun‘s chat with Tove Lo for our PEDESTRIAN.TV X Platypus Shoes podcast, Sneak Up, there were so many golden quotes dropped by the Swedish singer-songwriter, I could hardly keep up.

In no particular order and with zero context, here are some pearls of wisdom straight from Tove Lo’s mouth:

  • “Perfection is boring.”
  • “I’ve never said I was a role model, but I’m always honest about how I think and feel. I’m not the most well-read person, but I know my core values and sometimes I fuck up.”
  • “There’s a positive way to use bitch and a negative way.”
  • “[Bisexuality is] something that’s natural for me – it shouldn’t always have to be seen as a statement.”
  • “Until there’s full equality, there needs to be a support system for the LGBTQ community.”
  • “In Sweden, we don’t censor at all and you’ll hear ‘fuck’ on the radio all day.”
  • “I just think that I can be a party girl and still be deep, and have something to say, and be smart, and be really good at my craft as a songwriter.”

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

The release of Sunshine Kitty back in September marks Tove Lo’s fourth album in five years – an impressive feat for anyone.

And while I’ll be forever grateful to Tove Lo for gifting us with Habits (Stay High), the song I’ve replayed thousands of times whenever I’m experiencing that unique combo of angst and adrenaline, I might be even more grateful for the interview she just did.

Together, Jack and Tove (can you call her Tove? I need answers) chat about everything from the changing landscape of pop music, to sexuality, to the pressure on female musicians to be good role models.

And everything in between.

Be sure to give the interview a listen, and when you’ve marvelled in everything Tove Lo-related, chuck the rest of the eps of Sneak Up an ear or two below:
