One of the hottest acts that are hitting our shores for the first time in February for Laneway Festival is 20-year-old Rex Orange County – a man who seems to be effortlessly cool and makes music that is dusky and warm and such a damn vibe. And if you haven’t gotten yourself tickets to the festival, then make sure you get right around the lad’s blissful low-fi jazzy soul-tinged hip-hop (I know) at his two sideshows in Sydney and Melbourne.
With two albums of dreamy tunes under his belt already at the prime age of 20, Rex Orange County has dropped details of the shows, which are in venues so small that you’ll be able to basically breathe the same air as the man who has played in Frank Ocean‘s backing band, shared the stage with Skepta, and recorded a bloody duet with Randy Newman – clashing your 90s Toy Story love and 2019 music crush together in one rendition of ‘You’ve Got A Friend In Me.’ Try not to cry at that one.
He’s also insanely talented if you weren’t stanning him already – he plays every instrument on his album which makes me feel totally fine that I can barely play two songs on guitar. We love a multi-instrumentalist king.
Rex Orange County will be hitting Sydney’s Metro Theatre for an 18+ show on Tuesday, February 5th, and Melbourne’s 170 Russell for an all-ages show (!!!) on Wednesday, February 6th, so make sure you grab a ticket and somehow swindle the next day off work/school/uni/life, because you’re going to be spending it swooning over ‘Loving Is Easy‘ like, all day.
Honestly, at the rate that Rex Orange County is going, he won’t be playing small venues like this tour for very long at all. Like, these are the kinds of crowds he’s used to playing to in the US now, so…
Full details for the shows are below, and tickets go on sale 10am Wednesday, January 9, so set your alarm, and set a warning alarm, and get your mates to text you to remind you so you really don’t miss out on this.
