Kaya Scodelario Opens Up On Horrifying Sexual Assault Experience At Age 12

In the midst of last year’s revolutionary upheaval of the rampant sexual abuse in the entertainment industry and the ongoing #MeToo conversations, actress and model Kaya Scodelario was one of many voices who put their stories forward.

Tweeting back in October, the Skins and Maze Runner star revealed that she suffered sexual abuse at the age of twelve:

Now, months later, Kaya has opened up more on the incident, describing how she’s glad she opened up on the subject and appreciates the outpouring of support that followed.

Speaking to Metro UK, Kaya says:

The response was wonderful, it was a relief but I am still dealing with it, and I am now dealing with a new side of it, which is this.

I will be asked about it forever now. I hope it doesn’t define me but it will always be under my name and I accept that – but I am proud I was brave enough to do it and I am grateful for the support I had from friends.

She also opened up on the mix of emotions she experienced prior to decided to go public and share her story:

I remember thinking that if I was 12-years-old and I had this horrific thing happen to me but I saw a woman I admired speaking up about it, it would have made me feel less guilty, and it would have inspired me to think “this won’t hold me back, this is something that has happened but I am not a victim”. ‘So I thought if I can do that for one person then I owe it to my 12-year-old self.

Scodelario next appears in the final Maze Runner flick The Death Cure, out in cinemas this week.
