Whilst I am almost loath to praise a man in Hollywood in 2018 given the ongoing circumstances, I couldn’t go past this story about perfect, unproblematic angel man Darren Criss doing the rounds today.
The yarn goes that former Glee star Criss was going about his handsome actor-ey duties on last week’s Golden Globes red carpet when he met a reporter named Yong Chavez covering the event.
Chavez brought up Criss’ latest project American Crime Story: Versace, a Ryan Murphy-helmed re-telling of the 1997 assassination of Italian designer Gianni Versace, when she mentioned she had been declined media credentials to the show’s upcoming premiere.
Chavez was particularly upset to be overlooked for a spot, considering the show heavily features Filipino-Americans and Filipino actors and she herself has Filipino roots.
When I told #DarrenCriss that I couldn’t cover/was declined creds to premiere of ACS:Versace w/c stars & tells struggles of a Fil-Am family seldom seen on TV, he took my phone & emailed the publicists. #speechless #PinoyPride @AsiansInHollywd @CAPEUSA pic.twitter.com/wreyde0oJn

In a tweet that has taken off in the past 24 hours, Chavez regales how Criss immediately asked for her phone and emailed the publicists himself, asking for her to gain accreditation. Just in case you’re a huge skeptic about nice pure things happening in the world (understandable tbh) there’s video evidence:

Although we’re yet to hear if Chavez was able to get to the Versace premiere or not, she’s still extremely chuffed with how things went down:
Publicist didn’t respond so that’s that. I got my intrvw w/ him so my story is all set at least. But this experience proves that representation is something that Hollywood still needs to work on. It needs to be practiced beyond big statements at award shows.

DARREN CRISS: GOOD GUY.
