We all know that dogs are good boys, but Darby the Pitbull brought a whole new meaning to the words “good boy” when he saved his owner from a shark attack.

Fisherman and dog-dad James White was minding his own business while fishing when he landeda 180cm sevengill shark. However, things took a turn for the worst when the shark freed itself from the hook and bit his ankle, according to 7News.

“The first time I told somebody this, they were like, ‘You’re out of your mind, there’s no way that happened’,” James said.

Despite its relatively small size, the shark managed to sink its teeth into White’s flesh, which obviously caused him to panic. But when he thought all hope was lost, his trusty pitbull Darby came to the rescue.

The 45kg one-year-old jumped out of the window of the car and came to his owner’s rescue. Whoever said dogs don’t actually love us is WRONG.

When he heard his owner in distress, Darby leapt from the car and bit into the shark’s gills. However, this only sunk the shark’s teeth deeper into James’ leg.

“And I told him, ‘No back off’ and then [Darby] repositioned and grabbed it by the tail,” White said. “He literally ran up the hill with it and pulled it off my leg.”

After he was freed, White tossed the shark back into the ocean.

Despite Darby’s efforts, James still suffered some pretty serious injuries.

“Immediately there was blood everywhere, the first bite punctured an artery.”

I assume Darby has received lots of extra treats and pats, but I doubt he’ll be rushing to go back to the beach anytime soon!

Darby, who’s nickname is “House Hippo” is the pride and joy of the family now. White told NBC that he’s eternally grateful for his pup.

“He’s been a part of the family from day one. Just now a little more. If it wasn’t for him I would have been a lot worse,” said.
