Let This Rescued Squirrel & Her Many Adorable Hats Destroy You With Cuteness

squirrel wearing hats

Maybe it’s just because we don’t have them in Australia, but squirrels have always seemed pretty cool to me – smart little furry mates with cute tails who move at the speed of light and do adorable shit like trying to hide acorns in their dog mate’s fur.

Still, I never really entertained the possibility of a squirrel as a pet. That seems like it would be akin to keeping a possum in your house: cute, initially, but then you come home and there’s shit everywhere and it’s eaten all your Tip Top and taken off.

How wrong I have been about squirrels. They are not unperturbable gluttons like our own furry arboreal creatures; they’re small, they’re dainty, and they’re fucking adorable.

At least this one is.

This is Bella, a grey squirrel who was rescued from being an owl’s dinner when she was just a few weeks old. That was back in 2009, and the South Carolina family who saved her and nursed her back to health have enjoyed her friendship ever since.

Yep, friendship to the point of happily wearing hats. Many, many hats.

According to Brantley Harrison, the woman who brought Bella into her family, she was initially raised alongside three of her siblings. When they were all released into the wild, Bella was the only one who regularly came back to hang out – posing for photos, getting some snacks, playing with Harrison’s son, and trying on all her hats.

It seems like squirrels aren’t the only animals the Harrisons have rescued. They’ve also got four dogs (heaven), and have been known to foster opossums, which look like giant idiot rats and I love them more than life itself.

These friends of the local wildlife are basically living a Disney film, and I for one am disgustedly jealous. How very dare they.

Awwwwwwwwww.
