Animal rights organisation PETA bestowed their inaugural Compassion In Film Award to Bradley Cooper for casting his beloved doggo in A Star Is Born.

In the film, Charlie belongs to Cooper’s character Jackson Maine and Ally (Lady Gaga).

PETA were particularly chuffed because Cooper chose to cast Charlie instead of “a dog supplied by one of Hollywood’s notorious animal exhibitors”.

PETA’s Senior Vice President Lisa Lange said in a statement:

“Bradley Cooper’s happy, adorable, and much-loved dog steals the spotlight— and viewers’ hearts — in this film because it’s clear that he loved being with his real-life ‘dad’,” Lange said.

“PETA has witnessed so much abuse and neglect of dogs, both on and off set, that we’re hoping Cooper’s kind decision sets a precedent for all of Hollywood to follow.”

In an interview with PEOPLE Cooper said he “wanted this relationship with the dog” in the film.

“[Jackson and Ally] don’t have a child together but they have a dog together, and I wanted it to be part of their story. I love dogs,” Cooper told PEOPLE.

Charlie, who is named after Cooper’s late father, is loving all the new attention. According to Cooper Charlie even has a very real agent now.

“I don’t talk to him much anymore. He doesn’t return my calls. He always walks away from me unless I have food.”

A Star Is Born is the fourth remake of the timeless love story of veteran muso Jackson Maine and a struggling musician named Ally (Gaga). One night as Ally is performing in a bar, Jackson rocks up and is immediately enamoured of her. Just as Ally has all but given up on her musical career, Jackson pulls her up on stage to sing that song ‘Shallow’ and unsurprisingly, she’s a hit. But as Ally’s career skyrockets, she finds her relationship with Jackson in trouble.

A Star Is Born will hit Aussie cinemas, October 18.

It’s insane to think that this is Gaga’s first role in a feature film and Cooper’s directorial debut.

Not bad, not bad at all.

Listen, relisten, cry…
