Meanwhile, At An Aussie Uni: A Lecturer Recited Demi Lovato’s Skyscraper To Motivate Students

Demi Lovato, Skyscraper, Monash

There is nothing quite like your uni professor reciting the lyrics to Demi Lovato‘s ‘Skyscraper’ to get you in the fighting mood, right? ‘Cos that’s exactly what happened to a bunch of marketing students at Monash University this month.

In short, a TikTok showing a senior marketing lecturer at Monash reciting the lyrics is currently doing the rounds.

I didn’t even do marketing when I studied at Monash, but I know the bloke in the TikTok I’m about to show you is Peter ‘Wags’ Wagstaff. I know that because all my mates who did do marketing back in the day loved him. For years I wandered around campus, wondering if I would ever witness the man at work. Spoiler alert: I did not, but thanks to a student on TikTok I finally… get it.

Quinn, or @onedollafrozencoke on TikTok, shared the clip of her boyfriend’s lecture on Wednesday. In it, Wags and Dr Angela Cruz (as people have identified in the comments) introduced “Today’s ‘You Can Do It’ Moment”.

In the grips of a fourth lockdown in Melbourne, one may scoff at a lecturer’s efforts to galvanise their students into hanging in there. But it is June after all, which means that after 12 weeks of telling yourself you’d pick up the slack next week, exams have inevitably arrived.

Set the scene: you’re on the brink of giving up and you’ve come to the conclusion that ‘P’s do indeed get the degrees. But there, on your screen, is Wags and Angela performing the lyrics of ‘Skyscraper’ by Demi Lovato to you.

“Demi Lovato said, ‘Go on, try and tear me down. I will be rising from the ground like a skyscraper,’” Wags said, quite literally standing up and out of frame as he recited the lyrics as if they were Shakespearean poetry.

“Like a skyscraper,” Angela echoed.

Like a skyscraper…

Quinn’s TikTok has been flooded with fellow students, past and present, praising Wags and Angela for being, well, themselves. It’s even made me reminisce about my time at Monash, from pretending to sign up to literally any club just to get a free hot dog for lunch, to eating all the hot chippies from Neptunes. God, I hope Neptunes is still there.

If you do have an exam(s) this month – godspeed, and I hope the power of Demi Lovato’s ‘Skyscraper’ is with you.
