Your Old Mate Bebo Is Making A Comeback Next Month, Because It’s 2005 Somewhere, Baby

Bebo

Bebo, that weird cousin of MySpace where you posted photos of your asymmetrical 2000s haircuts in all their glory, is rising like a phoenix from the ashes, and making a return in 2021.

Overnight, in a development seemingly borne of pure chaos, an announcement appeared on the main page of the site, reading:

“Bebo is coming back in February 2021 as a brand new social network. This is a totally new site developed by the original founders. All the old accounts are long gone (probably for the better, though sorry for the old photos!).”

Immediately upon seeing this, I was concerned that the site might be relaunching as some kind of conservative platform to capture those who left Facebook and Twitter after Trump‘s ousting.

That does not seem to be the case, though, as the announcement added:

“On the good news front, Trump is banned from bebo before we’ve even launched. The world really IS moving forward!”

Well there you have it, then. The site is currently in a closed, private beta.

The nostalgia factor is high, and former users are already out there sharing their awkward memories of their time on the original Bebo:

The site, whose name is an acronym for ‘Blog Early, Blog Often’, launched in 2005, and at the height of its popularity, it was bigger than MySpace in the United Kingdom.

AOL bought the site for a cool $850 million in 2008, but its popularity tanked as rival Facebook took off, and it was sold to a hedge fund before filing for bankruptcy in 2013.

The site’s original owners later bought it back for the much lower sum of $1 million, and the site has since been relaunched as a streaming platform and a place for eSports tournament.

We’ll see how it fares a a social network once again when it returns next month.
