Police Identify YouTube Shooting Suspect As Distressed 39 Y.O. Video Creator

The woman suspected of opening fire at YouTube’s headquarters in California has been identified as a content creator angered by the video platform’s alleged demonetisation and censorship of her videos.

Senior law enforcement officials allege Nasim Aghdam was responsible for the shooting, which left at least three people wounded. The 39-year-old also took her own life in the incident.

Aghdam is said not to have any personal ties to anyone within the facility, but authorities believe the shooting may have been spurred by a domestic dispute. Law enforcement authorities are not currently treating the incident as an act of terror.

A website apparently belonging to Aghdam features videos criticising YouTube for demonetising and censoring her content. A message on the site said “there is no free speech in the real world and you will be suppressed for telling the truth that is not supported by the system.

“Videos of targeted users are filtered and merely relegated so that people can hardly see their videos.”

In a statement, Google CEO Sundar Pichai called the event an “unimaginable tragedy.”

We’ll keep you posted on this one.
