“You Are A Liar & A Killer”: Courier Mail Smashes Gerard Baden-Clay Again

Dedicating newspaper frontpages to giant, foot-down statements is something of a fad at the moment, and The Courier Mail is certainly not getting left behind.

Following on from yesterday’s edition, which pulled no punches in expressing its feelings on the decision by the Queensland Court of Appeal to overturn the murder conviction handed down to Gerard Baden-Clay – instead downgrading his guilty verdict to a charge of manslaughter – the NewsCorp publication again went in on Baden-Clay, and the case writ large, by splashing its frontpage today with a decidedly non-subtle statement.

“Dear Gerard Baden-Clay,

We know you are a liar, a cheat and a killer.

You humiliated your wife, the mother of your children, before taking her life.

In death, as in life, you continue to dishonour her and disgrace yourself.

It’s time to stop. Tell the truth.

Apologise to Allison’s family, show remorse, beg for forgiveness, and serve your time in jail.”

Don’t get us wrong, the acts of the man are despicable to say the very least – and stand as a signpost in the murky undercurrent of domestic violence and violence against women that runs through the veins of Australian society like poison – but the law’s a fickle, unemotional beast. And it has to be.
It’s sad. But it’s true.
And media emotionality like this doesn’t really help anyone.
