Two Men & A Cat Named ‘Soy Boy’ Were Rescued After Their Yacht Got Stranded

In other animals-that-needed-rescuing news, two men and a ginger cat named ‘Soy Boy‘ were rescued by authorities in Queensland overnight, after their yacht’s sail ripped in rough seas.

The trio was attempting to sail from Yeppoon in QLD to Geelong in Victoria when their boat hit rough seas not far from their set off point. The crew attempted to drop an anchor but the 8-10m swell tore through their ropes and ripped the 38-metre yacht’s sails.

After struggling to turn the boat’s engine over, the two blokes and little Soy Boy (who I assume did absolutely nothing to help except probably get under everyone’s feet) made a distress call after midnight and had to be rescued by the RACQ LifeFlight chopper from Fraser Island about 500km away Yeppoon, where they ended up.

LifeFlight Rescue air officer Shane Whyte said that when the crew came across the yacht, it was too dangerous to rescue them then and there, and instead waited for the swell to wash the boat ashore at Orchid Beach.

Due to the conditions at 3 o’clock in the morning, it was too dangerous to do a winch in the dark.

We decided to leave the light on them as the boat washed into the beach and just kept in communication via radio.

According to the RACQ LifeFlight team, the two blokes were sailing the yacht down to Victoria as a favour for one of the skipper’s daughters, and when the water got rough, they popped lil’ Soy Boy in the glove box to keep him from flying overboard. I just…sure. Okay.

Thankfully all three are uninjured but could you imagine even trying to put a cat on a boat, let alone try and sail close to 3000kms with one on board. Also, who names their cat Soy Boy? I’m pretty sure the cat is not a soy boy. I’ve got so many questions about this whole thing.
