Women Are Vanishing From Billboards And Magazines Across New York

New York is probably looking like a very strange place right now, as images of women disappear from billboards, advertisements and magazine covers across town.

As The New York Times explain, this is all thanks to a carefully-planned campaign from The Clinton Foundation, who worked with various companies like Dove, Under Armor and Condé Nast to pull it off.
They’re doing it as part of a campaign to draw attention to their No Ceilings initiative, which has just released an in-depth report on the status of women and girls around the world.
In more general terms, they are hoping to highlight the fact that women around the world are “not there yet” in terms of gender equality.  
Around New York, Scarlett Johansson has vanished from the cover of magazine, while Serena Williams is absent from a giant Beats ad in Times Square, and Karlie Kloss is all gone from a Kate Spade billboard.
The viral stunt, which was organised to coincide with International Women’s Day on May 8, caught the attention of various well-known women, who have removed their profile pictures from Instagram in support.

A video on the No Ceilings website goes into more detail about the project, with supporters like Amy Poehler and Jenny Slate explaining exactly what’s happening and why.

The foundation’s report, available as a PDF on the site, contains 850,000 data points, spanning more than 20 years, from over 190 countries, about the state of women.
“Through data visualizations and stories, we aim to present the gains and gaps in understandable, sharable ways,” the website notes, “including by making the data open and easily available.”
