Woman Charged After Allegedly Stubbing Out A Lit Cigarette On A Journalist’s Face

Remarkable scenes highlighting some real “cream of the crop” behaviour from the Australian public today, with a 9 News reporter allegedly assaulted with a lit cigarette, shoved into her face by a woman as she left court this morning.

Outside the Caboolture Magistrates Court, a small media pack had gathered and was questioning the woman, who was attending court as a visitor to witness proceedings against Stevee Jane Kennedy, who stands accused of murdering her ex-boyfriend early on Sunday morning.
22 year-old Kennedy was charged with the murder of 26 year-old Freeman Brookes, believed to be her ex-boyfriend. Brookes staggered into a Sunshine Coast service station at around 1:15am, bleeding from an apparent stab wound. He died a short time after being rushed to hospital. Kennedy was charged with murder by police on Sunday afternoon, and was appearing in court for a committal hearing, and was remanded in custody to reappear on July 24th.
Channel 9 reporter Alex Bernhardt was among the media contingent that followed the 23 year-old unidentified woman a short distance down the footpath after exiting the courtroom. The woman, pushing a baby stroller, blew smoke at reporters before lashing out, appearing to stub out her lit cigarette on Bernhardt’s face before hurrying away.

Bernhardt did not suffer any serious burns from the incident, and stated to the Daily Mail:

“[It left] a bit of a red mark… but I don’t want to blow it out of proportion, it’s gone now.”

“It certainly wasn’t something I was expecting when you’re doing your job.”

Police subsequently charged the charming individual with public nuisance. She will appear in court on July 23rd to have the charges heard.
