Why Is It A Big Deal If Cate Blanchett Has Dated Women Before?

Gosh darn, some shitheads really do forget their manners as soon as a celebrity we assumed to be straight is rumoured to be part of the LGBTQI community, don’t they?

That’s why it’s super crazy big news that talented actress, ardent feminist and beautiful human Cate Blanchett told Variety magazine that she has had relationships with women before.
It was whilst talking to Cate about her recent film, Carolin which she plays a bisexual woman in New York who has a romantic affair with a female department store clerk, played by Rooney Mara. The film is based on Patricia Highstreet’s 1952 novel, The Price of Salt
The interviewer asked her if the film was her first lesbian experience. She “coyly” responded by asking if they meant in the film, or in real life. When asked to confirm if she had had relationships with women, Cate answered: “Yes. Many times.”
But what? But.. but… she’s straight! I always thought she was straight! Why did she hide her sexuality from millions of strangers for years?! She’s married to a man and has children! Won’t somebody think of the children! What do you mean her sexual history is her business and it doesn’t affect me?
Cate has dated women in the past. She’s been married to a dude called Andrew Upton since 1997 and has four children; three boys, and a recently adopted daughter. She hasn’t labelled herself as bisexual, or pansexual. She has just doggone dated some ladies in her lifetime.
Her ‘bisexual past’, as Sydney Morning Herald labelled it, isn’t a ‘bisexual’ past until Cate wants to say it is. At the moment, it’s just her past, so let’s leave the labels, or lack of, up to the human being involved, shall we?
Oh, and postscript: Sexuality does not ‘end’ or ‘change’ when a life-partner of any gender is chosen.
