What’s On This Week In Art


This week of art exhibitions happening around the country features a crazy mix of amazing contemporary artists – the prolific Jodee Knowles heads to the Margaret River, Go Font Ur Self hits Melbourne for the latest book launch and auction of prized type based artists, and major illustration talents Alex Gillies and Murdoch are teaming up in Brisbane to show off new collections. Also happening in Brisbane is the opening of landmark exhibition “Surrealism: The Poetry of Dreams” at GoMA which features some of the world’s most incredible works of modern art, direct from the famed Pompidou Centre in Paris. This week also marks the closing of Oh Really Gallery in Newtown (NSW) who are bowing out with one last bash.

Who OH REALLY GALLERY FAREWELL SHOW
What Time to say goodbye to the Newtown staple Oh Really – but they’re going out with a bang. The closing party will feature a wall to wall install of mural work featuring some of Sydney’s finest street artists, as well as live music and a heap of nostalgic memories of good times passed. What “The Black Dog” is the latest collection show by the lauded Melbourne painter William MacKinnon. His evocative oils of outback Australia painted from the perspective of the road capture the isolation and immense beauty of the land.

What Chris Booth’s long awaited exhibition “Super-Pop MK3” has opened at Metro Gallery. The show encompasses seven high reliefs and nine works on paper in Booth’s distinct style. Describing his approach as ‘Lichtenstein goes to Osaka’, Booth is a self-proclaimed pop-art and anime fanatic.
