Western Plains Zoo Announced 7 Tassie Devil Joeys & LOOK THEY’RE SO CUTE

Ok it’s really hard to keep calm about this because not only are tiny baby animals genuinely the most pure and innocent things in this god-awful world, but Tasmanian Devils are so bloody endangered that a successful breeding season is cause to celebrate.

So throw ya shackas up mates, because seven (!!!) wee Tassie terrors have been announced as happy, healthy, bouncing bambinos at Taronga‘s Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo this week.

The joeys were born across two litters, one in March and one in June, and two little boys and one smol girl from the first litter have emerged from mum Lana‘s pouch recently. The second litter of four to mama Pooki are yet to be weaned, but are starting to open their eyes and peep their little noses out from the pouch.

Anyway, LOOK AT THEM. LOOK THEY’RE SO SMALL.

Seven joeys in one year is seen as a successful breeding season, as Tassie Devil mums are known to have up to 50 babies in one litter, but only four teats to feed with. It’s survival of the fittest from the moment the joeys are born.

In the past couple of decades, we’ve also seen Tassie Devil populations declining rapidly as Devil Facial Tumour Disease (a disease that only affects Tassie Devils) has sadly killed over half of the population since it was first discovered in 1996.

So a big hooray to the very clever devils over at Western Plains Zoo, and we can’t wait to meet the other four wee babs soon.
