Instagram’s Wedding Cake Rock Obsession Is So Bad The Cops Are Now Involved

So many tourists and Instagrammers are flaunting safety regulations at NSW‘s infamous Wedding Cake Rock that park rangers have enlisted the police to help out, ABC reports.

The rock formation, perched some 50m above the ocean near Bundeena, has become a prized location to take dramatic snaps. The problem: it’s been deemed perilously unsafe, with geologists warning the entire sandstone mass could collapse into the waters below at any moment.

A French tourist died at the site in 2014 when a section of the rock crumbled beneath his feet. To ensure no more lives are put at risk, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service erected a fence around the site in 2016 and promised fines up to $3,300 for anyone who dares to vault the barrier.

That obviously hasn’t stopped folks from giving it a red hot crack. Speaking to the ABC, a NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service spokesperson confirmed NSW Police are now assisting with “site compliance” to deal with the masses of folks who still reckon the image is worth it.

They said 13 fines of varying severity have been doled out so far, and hundreds of folks have been issued warnings.

The spokesperson said people aren’t just vaulting the fence, but are actively “avoiding detection” while doing so. The continual risk-taking has forced ’em to assess their options regarding what else can be done to convince people it’s seriously, actually, and legitimately unsafe.

If you needed any more reason not to take a photo on the ledge, consider this: it’s been fucken’ done to death. Give it a rest.
