Hopefully by now you’ve had a little bit of time to grieve and come to terms with the fact that iconic Japanese animation production studio Studio Ghibli will be shutting down its feature film production arm and largely scaling its productions to a much smaller, non-creative operation.
The unparalleled creative output of the studio has influenced modern animation in immeasurable ways through classic films such as My Neighbour Totoro, Ponyo and Princess Mononoke.
Whilst you can probably expect to see more tributes from the industry emerging in the coming months (and years; animation’s a timely business, let’s face it) they’ve all got a fairly high bar to clear if this first one is any indication.
The gang at Fox Network‘s Animation Domination High-Def offshoot (they’re kinda aiming for a network TV version of Adult Swim, and produced the actually really, really good and funny and everything first season of Axe Cop last year) have put out this tribute animation and accompanying song.
If you’ll look past the overt internet-ness of it (the word “feels” appears practically instantly) it’s a beautifully done tribute to the work of Ghibli and its spiritual father, Hayao Miyazaki.
*sniff* Sorry. My screen must have started emitting dust or something because my eyes are watery? Weird.
