
Barack Obama, now that he’s tidied up with his final presidential speech, is in the autopilot mode, tying up the loose ends of his Presidency. The Republicans in Congress, newly energised and dominant, are doing their best to unwind his signature piece of healthcare legislation – and they probably will succeed.
So now for the theatrics. He has given the highest civilian honour a president can confer – the Presidential Medal of Freedom – to his vice president, Joe Biden. He went a step above, giving Biden the medal with distinction,

Biden spoke after receiving the medal. “I don’t deserve this,” he said. “But I know it came from the president’s heart.”
