Watch: James Franco, Harmony Korine “Rebel” Trailer

A collaborative project between provocateur-auteur Harmony Korine and omnipresent Renaissance man James Franco is set to premiere at this year’s Venice Biennale. So far very little is known about the short film entitled “Rebel” except for a still picture (see beneath video) of Franco surrounded by a gang of naked women; and the following trailer.

If we were to make a guess based on the footage below, we’d wager the film is a remake of Nicholas Ray’s iconic urban drama Rebel Without A Cause except instead of being set in 1950s Los Angeles, it will be based in New York around the rivalry between ’90s rap adversaries Biggie and Tupac. Take a look at the preview then let’s discuss.

The soundtrack for the trailer comprises a track Pac and Biggie did together (“Psychos”), the gang of women are wearing matching Tupac t-shirts, and as for the Rebel Without A Cause theory, it definitely makes sense considering Franco’s love of ridiculously meta creative projects (for example, his turn on General Hospital as an artist called ‘Franco’). The turning point in Franco’s acting career was his performance as James Dean in a biopic about the ill-fated actor… who starred in the 1955 movie Rebel Without A Cause! See. It all makes perfect sense.

We’ll keep you posted on further updates although I’m pretty sure we’ve got it pegged.
