WATCH: Emma Watson Intros Campaign To End Uni Campus Assault In UN Speech

Current golden girl of gender equality Emma Watson has spoken in front of the United Nations on behalf of her group, ‘He For She‘.
The feminist collective has produced an impact report for the ‘10x10x10 University Parity Report‘ which Watson introduced to the UN, speaking eloquently about global campus assault rates at colleges and universities.
The 10x10x10 concept seeks to change patterns at 10 different universities around the world in order to make universities safe for all students, especially women.
It involves 10 heads of state, 10 global CEOs, and 10 university presidents, who will set concrete goals and chart their progress in order to eradicate sexual violence on uni campuses and reach gender equality.
The men sitting on the panel next to Watson are the university leaders who had committed to the 10x10x10 campaign at their respective places of teaching.
Watson began her speech to the UN by thanking her own university, Brown, for providing her with a safe environment that nurtured her politics and independent thinking. Watson then says that many places of higher learning have not addressed issues of gender disparity.
“What if our experiences at university show us that women don’t belong in leadership?

What if, as is the case at far too many universities, we are given the message that sexual violence isn’t actually a form of violence?”
She reiterates that the only learning environments that will successfully nurture and help students grow, are safe ones.
“A university should be a place of refuge that takes action against all forms of violence.

That’s why we believe that students should leave universities believing in, striving for, and expecting societies of true equality . . . in every sense, and that universities have the power to make that change.”

Locally, Human Rights Commissioner Gillian Triggs gave the preliminary details of Australia’s most comprehensive survey on sexual harassment and assault at Aussie universities yesterday.
The Commissioner said she was “shocked” by the early findings, saying 400 reports of assault had been filed in the survey, across 35 of the 39 participating universities.
Triggs told press,

“These assaults are seriously under-reported and once students knew they could come to us, it was like a dam bursting.”
There are no universities from Australia currently involved in the He For She ‘10x10x10 University Parity Report’.
