WATCH: Bill Shorten Makes Brutally Cringeworthy Appearance On ‘The Weekly’

They may have already one deeply strange and almost breathtakingly awkward Labor leader on the program, but ‘The Weekly‘ have outdone themselves, getting Bill Shorten to go head-to-head with Tom Gleeson on their ‘Hard Chat’ segment.

If you’re not familiar with the segment, it features a deadpan Gleeson asking guests (mostly politicians) some incredibly direct and frequently awkward questions about aspects of their public life, with hilarious and, at times, painfully cringe-y results.
Guests tend to be a bit hamstrung on the show: if they make jokes they look unfunny because politicians suck at jokes, if they act serious they look like complete dickheads. Unfortunately for Shorten (but fortunately for us), he tries both.
Gleeson directly accuses Shorten of having a hand in overthrowing Rudd and Gillard, as well as reminding him of the YouTube video from the time he got real trashed at a student union function and got all rowdy.
He even goes in on his appearance at Mardi Gras:
“Now, you marched at Mardi Gras with your wife, was that because you wanted to rub it in their noses that you can get married and they can’t?”
Shorten takes it like a champ though, possibly because he doesn’t have the backbone to respond in any other way. Have a watch, even if just for the brutal branch stacking joke he gets in:
Because it’s amazing, you can also watch the entire season finale of ‘The Weekly’ on iView.
