WATCH: A Celebration Of Photos That Make You Want To ‘Go Screen-Free’

Recently Canon Australia ran a countrywide search for a photo to Shine A Light on something Australians are passionate about; during which we went through how to take a powerful photo (or somewhere thereabouts).

After receiving more than 2000 photographs, the top 50 photos (which you can see HERE) were judged by a panel consisting of Dr Alex Byrne (Chief Executive of the State Library of New South Wales), Sandra Harrison (Commercial Editor – Visuals, Fairfax Media), Todd Sampson (advertising bro, novelty tee wearer and TV personality) and Jason McLean (Director – Consumer Imaging, Canon Australia).

One theme they saw emerging over and over again was ‘Connection’: “Canon Shine revealed that it’s the simple things in life that make us feel connected, safe and loved via images of friends, family and pets. Entrants urged people to be more appreciative of the connections they have. The isolation, sorrow and loneliness associated with a lack of connection in society was also highlighted through powerful images of homeless, elderly, disabled and minority groups.”

The winning photo, taken by Julie Kerbel, entitled ‘Disconnect to Reconnect’ encourages Aussies to go screen-free once a week to reconnect with the people we value the most. It’s pretty darn cute and the above video will likely make you want to unplug ALL the screens. Temporarily, of course.

Be sure to check out the exhibition of Canon Shine top 50 finalists, at New South Wales State Library, until 14 September.
