Vogue has responded to accusations of tone-deafness and flat-out ignorance from the LGBTQI and gender-diverse communities over their most recent snafu: an article in which they ill-advisedly suggest that heterosexual cisgender couple Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid are gender fluid… because they wear each other’s clothes sometimes.
Hmm; no.
Think Vogue is a bit confused on what gender fluidity is! Wearing your gf’s T-shirt does not make you gender fluid https://t.co/5yvh8FmUky pic.twitter.com/yPADJDwvPV

But rather than double down on the elevation of Zayn & Gigi to queer icon status, Vogue has owned that they might have made a bit of a stuff-up, with a spokeswoman saying:
“The story was intended to highlight the impact the gender-fluid, non-binary communities have had on fashion and culture. We are very sorry the story did not correctly reflect that spirit – we missed the mark. We do look forward to continuing the conversation with greater sensitivity.”
Hard to stay mad when they’re at least trying to take criticism on board. Of course it remains surprising that no-one at any point during the publication of the original article suggested that maybe it could use a sensitivity read, but whatever – let’s take it as a win regardless.
