Virgin Australia Is Banning All Apple MacBooks From Checked Baggage Amid Recall

Virgin Australia has made the decision to restrict all  – yes, all – Apple MacBooks to carry-on baggage only, following Apple’s recall of some of the MacBook Pro models earlier this year.

Back in June, Apple announced a voluntary recall and replacement program for a number of older generation 15-inch MacBook Pro units.

“Because customer safety is a top priority, Apple is asking customers to stop using affected 15-inch MacBook Pro units,” the company said in a statement.

The problem is that these particular MacBooks contain a lithium-ion battery that may overheat and pose a fire risk. The units were sold between September 2015 and February 2017 and can be identified by its product serial number. If you’re a tad worried you have an affected model, you can check online right here.

If you’re eligible, Apple will replace your battery for free so check, check, check.

Anywho, Virgin issued the warning online, advising passengers that “ALL Apple MacBooks must be placed in carry-on baggage only.”

“No Apple MacBooks are permitted in checked-in baggage until further notice.”

On Sunday, Singapore Airlines straight up banned all of the affected laptops from flights.

“Customers are to refrain from bringing the affected models either as hand-carry or in checked baggage until the battery has been verified as safe or replaced by the manufacture,” the airline said in a statement.

Thai Airways also recently banned the doomed model from carry-on and checked luggage.

And last week in the US, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced it had also banned the affected laptop from all commercial flights.
