Aussies Under 30 Are Copping The Most Social Distancing Fines, So Try Staying The Fuck Home

Over half of fines related to Victoria’s coronavirus lockdown regulations were dished out to young people under 30, data published by the Herald Sun has revealed.

Under Stage 3 lockdown restrictions, people leaving the house for non-essential reasons can be slapped with on-the-spot fines of $1,652, and further fines of up to $20,000.

“Young people are not immune in this pandemic – many young people may think they are not in the age category for coronavirus, but they are, and the numbers prove that,” the state’s chief health officer Professor Brett Sutton said.

“We’ve seen from tragic cases around the world that even healthy young people can end up in intensive care.

“Our message to all Victorians is clear – stay home to keep yourselves safe, protect the most vulnerable in your own family and in the community and stop our health system from getting overwhelmed.”

Under the restrictions, it is unlawful to gather in groups larger than two, and loiter in public without a good reason.

In recent weeks, young people in Victoria have been fined for everything from playing backyard cricket to having a driving lesson (although the L-Player thankfully had his fine reversed).

Meanwhile, around 20% of fines went to people aged between 30 and 39, and 10% went to those aged between 40-49. It is not known how many people from different age groups were let off with a warning.

Over 70% of fines were issued to males.

“It’s important we’re using discretion in maintaining the public confidence in us in the way we’re applying those,” Deputy Police Commissioner Shane Patton later said.

He has vowed to check every fine issued and urged officers not to use a “sledge hammer” approach when enforcing lockdown regulations.
