VIC State Government Will Support Sex Party’s Abortion Buffer Zone Bill

As you may have seen us talk about the other day, Australian Sex Party MP Fiona Patten introduced a bill to Victorian State Government, which would install a 150m “buffer zone” around reproductive health clinics.
The Bill was introduced in an attempt to protect women who enter and exit the buildings, due to anti-abortionist protestors who aggressively harass, abuse, and attack female patrons of these clinics.
It has been reported today that State Government will support the bill
Government will introduce their own Bill largely modelled on Patten’s, but with some technical changes including the physical size of the buffer zone, and the maximum length and type of penalty for offenders.
Patten said she was completely comfortable with these changes:
“I suspect the bill that we will finally see at the end of this year will be something that’s robust, but also meets the initial intention of my bill,” she said.

The art of politics is an art of compromise and this enables us to get the best possible outcomes for the women accessing those services.”

Health Minister Jill Hennessey had a huge amount of praise for Patten, saying, “This will be Fiona’s bill, largely reflected and represented in the Government bill. We just have some of the boring enforceability and administrative issues to make sure we get it right.”
Ms. Hennessy stated that the bill will be introduced into Parliament before the end of 2015.
