VIC Police Planning A Crackdown On Those Pesky Text-Walkers (All Of Us)

Victoria Police and the Transport Accident Commission are 110% done with injuries and fatalities on Victoria’s roads. That’s understandable, really.

Still, a not-good-at-all trend will see police single out phone-using pedestrians: the number of drivers who admit to fiddling with their phones while driving continues to drop, but nearly 200 pedestrians have been killed on the roads in the past five years.

They reckon that number is largely attributable to avoidable distractions, ie. your phone.

Today, in a bid to get us to pay some bloody attention to where we’re walking, it was announced that police would be focussing on anybody who’s caught stepping onto the road while obviously distracted by their shiny tech.

In a statement, the TAC’s Joe Calafiore said authorities often see totally zoned-out walkers on Melbourne’s streets.

“You see it far too often – people walking along, looking down at their phones, listening to music on headphones, oblivious to their surroundings.

The message has to be that no phone call, no song and no text message is worth taking your attention from the traffic and risking your life for.”

Police have said they’d much rather have a chat than penalise anyone they catch being a numpty on the roads, but if you use your phone while (illegally) crossing, you’re up for the $76 fine plain ol’ jaywalkers are.

In the meantime, continue to use your noggins about this one, Australia.
