USyd Students Reckon Campus Sexism Goes Beyond Rank Slut-Shaming Journal

Sleazy as fuck, piss-head college students are something of a pop culture staple, we tend to associate them more with sweater-wearing, lacrosse-playing American frat boys than blokes in our own backyard but it sure seems like we’ve got some of our own.

Three students from Sydney‘s Wesley College spoke to 7.30 about the pervasive culture of super gross misogyny they’ve had to deal with, following from recent news about a journal published that listed, without their consent, who girls had (supposedly) hooked up with.
The students, who spoke to 7.30 anonymously for fear of reprisals, said that the journal wasn’t even the worst they’d seen, and that they were shocked to encounter this level of sexism:
“I think it’s quite disgusting that people of our generation are still so sexist, I thought that we’d moved passed this, and coming from an out of Sydney area I never experienced this back at home, so it was quite a shock to me that this sort of thing happens and still goes on in a place that’s supposed to be safe and where we can live while we’re at uni.”

Wesley College have refuted that they have a culture of misogyny and have refused to release the names of the people responsible for the journal, despite being asked by the Vice Chancellor of Sydney University.

Sharna Bremner, from advocacy group End Rape On Campus, says that issues like this aren’t limited to Sydney University and are representative of a nationwide issue.
