US Doctors Attempted Their First Uterus Transplant & It Didn’t Go So Well

It’s been announced that the first uterus transplant to be done in the US, unfortunately hasn’t worked.

The Cleveland clinic released a statement about the surgery, saying that the patient (known only as Lindsey, pictured below) was ‘well and recovering’, but had unfortunately had to have the new uterus removed after ‘complications’:
“We are saddened to share that our patient, Lindsey, recently experienced a sudden complication that led to the removal of her transplanted uterus.”
Lindsay seemed positive, despite failure of the major operation:
“I just wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude towards all of my doctors. They acted very quickly to ensure my health and safety.

Unfortunately I did lose the uterus to complications. However, I am doing O.K. and appreciate all of your prayers and good thoughts.”
The original nine-hour surgery occurred on Feb 25th, with doctors announcing that the surgery had been a success. A day after the press conference, Lindsey experienced the complication, and had emergency surgery to remove the uterus. The hospital did not elaborate on what went wrong.

The uterus’ that they are implanting are actually only temporary – women who can’t have kids will hopefully be able to have up to two babies over a 5 year period.
The hospital is currently carrying out a clinical trial – in which they’ll performing 10 uterine transplants with the goal of enabling them to have biological children – and they say it will continue.
We have all our fingers crossed for the rest of the trial, because everyone who wants a uterus, deserves a uterus.
