‘Un-Australian’ Masks Spark In-Fighting At Reclaim Australia Rallies

At this stage, it’d seem a dead cert that Reclaim Australia would have exhausted the limits of irony; after all, does a nation need “reclamation” if it is still allowed – hell, even encouraged – to demonstrate its opinions in a civil manner? Does the group’s insistence on ‘exposing’ Islam as a “violent” religion clash with the group’s own supporters going troppo at their demonstrations?
For all of those readily-apparent contradictions, today’s rallies have protestors finding even more new and exciting ways for the pot to call the kettle black.
Observe: The perfect symmetry of rallying against the supposed oppression of the hijab, while choosing to cover their own faces in the process.

Of course, perfectly, there are reports that different factions in the same camp even fought over the issue, with some claiming the face coverings were “un-Australian”. Pack ‘er up, boys, irony is dead.

Unfortunately, it’s not quite as dead as the xenophobic sentiments that continue to stir around the country. Around 300 protesters took to the streets of Melton, Victoria to parade their views today, and at least four have been arrested for weapons offences and “riotous behaviour.”

One of them even punched a police horse. The worst thing about that fact is it’s not even the first time a Reclaim Australia demonstration has devolved into horse-punching, with a police mount copping a fist in July’s protests too.

Of course, it’s unfair to paste the rallies with these accusations without giving attendees a chance to raise the level of rhetoric. When news crews presented themselves, how did protesters respond?

Oh.

The protests are still underway around the nation, but reports say anti-racism demonstrators have largely drowned out Reclaim Australia & Co. in Brisbane.
