Uber Driver Charged With Sexual Assault Of 17-Year-Old In Bondi

A 37-year-old Uber driver from southwest Sydney has been charged with the sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl in Bondi early Sunday morning.

In a statement, NSW Police write that he is believed to have collected three passengers in the Sydney CBD at about 1.30am on Sunday morning, before dropping two off in Bondi, with the remaining passenger headed onwards to North Bondi in the Uber.

It is alleged that he raped the victim, the third passenger, in his car.

She went on to report the assault to police at Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command, who opened an investigation.

Police arrested the driver at an address in Liverpool yesterday afternoon, bringing him in to Liverpool Police Station to face the charge of sexual intercourse without consent.

The driver made conditional bail – one of the conditions being that he cannot continue to work as an Uber driver.

As reported by the ABC, Uber released a statement about the alleged assault:

This is deeply upsetting and has no place anywhere. As soon as we became aware of this report, we immediately removed this driver’s access to the app.

We are working closely with the New South Wales Police Force and will continue to support their investigation in any way possible.

The driver has been suspended by Uber.

He is due to appear in Liverpool Local Court on 25 October.
