Two WA Uni Students Shot In New Orleans After Apparent Bungled Drug Deal

Two Western Australian students have been shot in New Orleans, with Curtin University reporting both are in hospital in a stable condition.

Local media has reported one was shot in the chest, while the other was hit in the abdomen. The New Orleans Advocate reports the pair were involved in a drug deal at the time.

The University’s vice-chancellor Deborah Kelly said their families were aware of the shootings, and “the University is providing support and assistance to the injured students and their families.

“Support is also being provided to the others in the group who were not in the vicinity of the shooting and are unharmed.”

The students, reportedly 21 and 23, were in the US to compete in the Intercollegiate Mining Games representing the WA School of Mines Wombats, and had traveled to New Orleans to celebrate their victory.

A competing team described the Wombats as “hardcore”, and that “they’re a tight-knit bunch and they train hard all year.”

We’ll update this story as it develops.
