Two Rescuers Drown Trying To Save Man Near Port Campbell

Two men have drowned after their rescue boat capsized in waters off Port Campbell this morning, while trying to save a man.

The man was taking photos from a rock ledge when he was swept into the water by a large wave at the mouth of the Sherbrook River in Victoria at about 10:40am.

Police say a rescue boat was sent to help the man but it flipped in the surf, throwing three people into the water.

One of the rescuers and the man swept into the rocks were winched to safety by an emergency helicopter.

The male rescuer is being airlifted to hospital with serious injuries and the man rescued is being taken to the hospital by road ambulance in a stable condition.

The bodies of the remaining two male rescuers were found in the water and were declared dead at the scene.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
