A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has struck Osaka, Japan, killing at least two people and injuring dozens.
The earthquake struck at 7:48am local time, bringing trains and subways across Osaka to a standstill and cutting power to 170,000 homes. A nine-year-old girl and an 80-year-old man were killed, both by collapsing walls.

Locals report heavy shaking during the quake, which occurred at a relatively shallow depth beneath Japan’s industrial heartland in the Osaka/Kyoto region. Thanks to its inland location, there was no risk of tsunami, and there has been no damage to any of the local nuclear facilities.
Twitter is full of reports from the ground, with people sharing photos of offices trashed by falling shelves, damaged train stations and burst waterpipes.
