The man, who was reportedly a resident of the apartment, died after being taken to hospital with serious injuries. Four firefighters also suffered injuries which were not life-threatening.
Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro confirmed that no members of the Trump family were in the building at the time of the fire.
Donald Trump tweeted soon after initial images of the blaze hit social media to claim that firefighters had successfully contained the blaze, and that the tower is “well built”.
Fire at Trump Tower is out. Very confined (well built building). Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!

CNN reports that while the president is correct in saying the fire is contained, it is not actually under control at this point.
A minor fire broke out in Trump Tower just three months ago, injuring two people. It is reported that the earlier fire may have been caused by faulty electrical components in a cooling tower.
