Trump Responds To London Tube Blast By Suggesting UK “Cut Off” The Internet

In news that should surprise exactly no-one, the President of the United States‘ response to the rush hour explosion that injured 18 people on the London subway this morning has been, well, less than presidential.

After news broke that the incident had officially been deemed to be terror-related, Donald Trump tweeted the following:

These tweets appear to suggest two things: one, that the person or people responsible for the explosion was known to Scotland Yard – something that Scotland Yard themselves have never said – and two, that the correct way to deal with “loser terrorists” is to cut off the internet.

Apparently it’s not the first time he’s talked about getting rid of the internet and therefore terrorism; in December, the BBC reported that Trump wanted to speak with Bill Gates about “closing up” the internet:

We’re losing a lot of people because of the internet. We have to see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what’s happening.

We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain areas, closing that internet up in some ways. Somebody will say, ‘Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.’ These are foolish people.

Many British reporters and members of the public have taken issue with Trump’s tweets, particularly the implication that he knows something about the attackers that the rest of the UK doesn’t – and perhaps shouldn’t.

It shouldn’t still be baffling and unnerving to see the man in charge of the world’s most powerful country sharting out the first thing to enter his peroxide-addled brain and broadcasting that to an audience of millions via social media – but it is.

One cannot help but wonder if Trump knows that “cutting off” the internet would also mean cutting off access to his beloved Twitter account.

We can dream, can’t we?
