NM if you missed out on last year’s Sexy Ebola Nurse costume, because it’s been well and truly gazumped in the ‘World’s Grossest Halloween Costume’ stakes.
Behold Call Me Caitlyn Unisex, a nod to Caitlyn Jenner‘s now-iconic Vanity Fair cover, on which she debuted her transition.
It’s up for presale on a couple of U.S costume-spruiking websites, including Wholesale Halloween Costumes and Anytime Costumes, along with the following sales pitch:
“Everyone has seen Vanity Fair’s popular July cover, so you’ll be easily recognized this Halloween when you dress up in the Call Me Caitlyn Unisex Adult Costume. With the items in the set, you’ll be able to emulate her picture perfect look for the upcoming party this year.
Included are a white padded top and matching shorts as well as a brunette wig so that you can dress as the softer side of the popular Olympian. A sash that says “call me Caitlyn” also comes with the set so that there will be no mistaking who you are dressed as this Halloween.
You probably won’t break any Twitter records when you wear this outfit like Caitlyn did when she first made her account, but you’ll be sure to get a few laughs out of your friends and the other guests at the get together.”
Transgender activists are understandably less than amused, slamming the costume for making a mockery of Cait and gender reassignment as a larger issue.
A Change.org petition requesting the costume’s recall has also popped up, with its target of 1,000 signatures halfway reached in a couple of hours.
Page creator Addison Vincent, from California, writes:
“To make a costume out of a marginalized identity reduces that person and community to a stereotype for privileged people to abuse. In this case, if you follow through with production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume, cisgender people will purchase it to make fun of her and our community.”
Spirit Halloween, one of the U.S’s biggest Halloween retailers, has confirmed it’ll be selling the costume at its stores in the lead-up to the holiday but reckon it’s a real mark of respect.
PR and marketing head, Trisha Lombardo, told Daily News:
“Caitlyn Jenner has proven to be the most important real-life superhero of the year, and Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her.”
