Tony Abbott Writes Opinion Piece On “Violent Binge Drinking Culture”

Today News Corp newspapers have published an opinion piece written by Prime Minister Tony Abbott on the topic of alcohol fueled assaults and the presence of a ‘violent binge drinking culture’ in modern Australia. Abbott believes the problem to be twofold, it is both said binge drinking culture, which he believes is running rampant amongst “youngsters”, and “the rise of the disturbed individual who goes out looking not for a fight but for a victim.”

He reiterates that one of the issues faced by courts, when dealing with crime perpetrated by booze/drugs/rock’n’roll altered folk, is that they can only act after the fact, whereas the community can start work now to come up with solutions “between police, local government, pubs and clubs and residents.”

So, in summary: a whole lot of outrage, rhetoric and posturing, not much putting forward of solutions or commitment to tackling these issue at the root.
Good one, babe.

Worth mentioning is the fact that, according to the Bureau of Statistics, amongst victims of assault, 67% of those aged 25-34 years years believed alcohol and/or any other substance contributed to their most recent incident of physical assault, comparatively 52% of victims aged 35 to 44 years, 54% of those 45 to 54 years and 47% of 55 to 64 year old victims also believed the same.

So really, [passo aggresso] alcohol and substance fueled assault really doesn’t seem like an issue confined to the “binge drinking culture” among “youngsters” over the last couple of decades, does it? Rather, it is something that everybody needs to get all up in and try and 1. Find the root of ‘why?’. Education and mental health issues also seem like good avenues to explore when looking for long term solutions, but what the fuck do we even know? We’re just a bunch of binge drinking youngsters.
