Tony Abbott Apparently Asked French Ambassador’s Same-Sex Partner To Stay In The Car

Oh Tony.

Fairfax reported yesterday, Tony Abbott‘s staff requested that Ambassador of France Stephen Brady‘s long-term partner, Peter Stephens, ‘stay in the car’ during a meet and greet in Paris on Anzac Day.
After this, it was reported that the Ambassador of France refused to comply with the request, and shortly afterwards put in his resignation, which was denied.
The alleged incident could have been down to protocol – ABC said that it is protocol for ambassador’s partner/spouse to be in the welcome party when the Prime Minister is travelling with his partner/spouse. Margie Abbott was not in attendance.
Regardless, many have commented via social media since; some requesting that the Prime Minister issue an apology to Brady and Stephens.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten was unimpressed, saying, “I sincerely hope this isn’t true … Australians deserve an explanation from Tony Abbott and if it’s true, Ambassador Brady and his partner deserve an apology.”

Tony Abbott’s office haven’t denied the incident took place, but said in a statement:

“The Prime Minister was very happy to be met by ambassador Brady and his partner when he arrived in Paris last month.”
