Tim Storrier Wins The 2012 Archibald Prize

Tim Storrier has just been announced as the winner of one of Australia’s most prestigious art prizes, the 2012 Archibald Prize for his faceless self-portrait titled The histrionic wayfarer (after Bosch) pocketing $75,000 in the process and the coveted title of ‘Person You Least Want To Duel In Draw Something‘.

In his artist’s statement, Storrier said ‘It refers to a painting by Hieronymus Bosch called The wayfarer painted in 1510 where the figure is believed to be choosing a path or possibly the prodigal son returning. It also has other references, I believe, but they are rather clouded in biblical history and time. A carapace of burden is depicted in The histrionic wayfarer, clothed in the tools to sustain the intrigue of a metaphysical survey. Provisions, art materials, books, papers, bedding, compass and maps, all for the journey through the landscape of the artist’s mind, accompanied by Smudge, the critic and guide of the whole enterprise.’

Stephen Lowe announced the winner long after midday today at the Art Gallery of NSW, keeping us waiting with baited breath for almost half an hour. And exhale.

Raelene Sharp previously won the Packing Room Prize for her portrait of John Wood, A strength of character.

The bookies’ odds to win were on Adam Chang’s portrait of King’s Speech producer Emile Sherman, who featured as just one of many pop culture themed entrants in this year’s prize.

UPDATE: Imrants Tillers won the Wynne Prize for Waterfall (after Williams) and Nigel Milsom took out the Sulman Prize for Judo House pt 4 (Golden mud). The runner up for the Archibald was Jenny SagesAfter Jack.
