The Physical Search For Theo Hayez Has Been Suspended In Byron Bay

The physical search Theo Hayez, the 18-year-old Belgian backpacker who went missing more than three weeks ago in Byron Bay, has been suspended for the weekend.

Per SBS News reports, an extensive search was carried out yesterday in the Tallow Beach area. Police divers and SES volunteers combed the area with assistance from the public.

NSW Police say that they will continue their investigations on Saturday and Sunday while the search is suspended. At this stage, it is not yet clear whether it will resume on Monday.

The teen was last seen on the evening of May 31 in Byron Bay. CCTV footage shows him leaving the Cheeky Monkey’s nightclub and using his mobile phone.

The last ‘ping’ from his phone was recorded in the early hours of June 1, around the area Cape Byron Lighthouse. The search this week concentrated on the headland around the lighthouse.

Hayez used WhatsApp on the night that he disappeared. The messaging service has assisted police in providing some data about his activity, but says it cannot access the encrypted content of his messages.

Theo’s father Laurent, who is in Australia to search for him, made a post to a Byron Bay community group overnight, thanking locals for their “warmness and kindness” over the past few weeks.
