Hayez, who would have turned 19 in September this year, was last seen leaving Cheeky Monkey’s bar in the NSW town on May 31 earlier this year. Pings from his mobile phone were detected near the Cape Byron lighthouse the next day, but after months of searching, NSW Police referred his case to the Coroner.

The only clues to his whereabouts have so far proved tantalisingly out of reach: a cap his family said belonged to Hayez but which reportedly failed to match his DNA in a test; WhatsApp messages which may shine a light on his final moments, but which are impossible to read.

Now, The Australian podcast team – a.k.a. the people behind award-winning podcasts The Teacher’s Pet and Who the hell is Hamish? – are, with the blessing of the family, exploring Hayez’s disappearance and “extraordinary” public search for him in its new podcast, The Lighthouse.

Led by The Australian’s national crime correspondent David Murray, who was asked by Hayez’s family to join the search, it will “also explores the stark contrast between Byron Bay’s millionaires and the homeless community living in hidden bush camps, along with the role technology has played in the case and how it will continue to transform the search for missing people”.

The first episode drops today, which each new episode following on a Friday. Get around the trailer below.
