The US Congress Wants Turnbull To Come Say G’day After Trump Dunked On Him

In a continuing and weird case of ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ a campaign is building in Washington for Malcolm Turnbull to come and address a joint sitting of Congress, presumably as an olive branch after Donald Trump hugely dunked on him.

Two senior Democrats have used the highly volatile call between Trump and Turnbull as a reason to invite the latter to say g’day to Congress, and reinforce the longstanding relationship between the two countries.
Eliot Engel and Adam Smith have written a letter to Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan to have Turnbull visit and deliver and address. “An invitation to the prime minister, in consultation with the executive branch, to visit and address Congress would be very well received,” Engel and Smith wrote.

“It would send a clear message that Congress continues to support a strong US- Australia relationship based on mutual respect.”

Turnbull getting powerbombed by Trump over the refugee deal brought both sides of Congress together, with both Republicans and Democrats using the opportunity to argue that the US-Australia bond is very important.
Of course, if the Democrats were even vaguely cognisant that Australia runs a border regime which is far harsher and more punitive than the one Trump is trying to railroad the courts over, perhaps they would be less magnanimous. Or not.
“An address by one of our closest partners in the Asia-Pacific would also strengthen Congress’s understanding of the challenges our nations face together in containing China, defeating terrorism, and promoting the rule of law, free expression and free markets,” Representatives Engel and Smith wrote.
“Through two world wars, and in every major conflict since, Australian troops have fought and died alongside Americans in defence of democracy.”

There you go. One thing the letter doesn’t acknowledge is that the Liberal partyroom would probably knife him instantly the moment he left the country. They’re starting to feel a little peckish.
