The Reason Big Macs Can Survive Molten Copper Isn’t Actually That Gross Tbh

So, by now everyone’s likely seen the viral video in which someone pours molten copper over a McDonald’s Big Mac, and it desperately fails to look even remotely terrible from being covered in a liquid that’s around 1085ºC.

Here it is again:
And, you’ve probably seen someone on Facebook share the video, saying something along the lines of ‘ugh, fast food is so plastic/fake/filled with preservatives/indigestible, I can’t believe anyone puts that in their body!’
It’s sparked a looooot of conversation about that innate ‘gross’ feeling one gets after demolishing fast food, and a tough-as-guts Big Mac proving its indestructibility via the use of searing hot liquid seemed to confirm everyone’s suspicions.
Well, look – we’re not here to tell you Maccas is healthy. It’s delicious, and great for hangovers, and it is probably filled with a bunch of preservatives (what junk/fast food isn’t?!). But, it’s fine to eat in moderation.
But, anyone saying that that’s the reason it didn’t get completely pulverised by the copper is kinda wrong.
The reason that the burger didn’t explode with the fire of a thousand suns is actually because of the water content.

A pretty huge portion of the dough used to make Maccas buns is still H20, even after baking. When the water content in the bun comes into contact with molten copper, a layer of steam is created which protects the burger from the searing heat. Same with the water content in the patty. And lettuce is mainly water, so same deal there.

Look, here’s a video of a similar situation happening to a steak:
Those crazy fuckers from Mythbusters even did a thing on this a few years ago. They legitimately dipped their hands in water, then into molten copper, and described the sensation as ‘kind of warm and pleasant’:
So, yeah. The molten copper would do the exact same thing to a stick of celery. Don’t cry over all the Big Macs you’ve chowed down in the past. You’re only human; it’s not going to kill you.
Continue lovin’ it™, or whatever their slogan is these days. Or don’t. Your choice! We just wanted to make sure y’all had the ~facts~.
MYTH BUSTED!
