The First Newspoll Of The Year Is … Not Great For Abbott

As Tony Abbott prepares to front up to a leadership challenge this morning, The Australian‘s latest Newspoll, the first for the new year, shows his personal approval rating, and that of the Coalition, at record lows.
Their figures, which you can see in full here, show Labor leading the Coalition 57% to 43% in the Two-Party-Preferred poll, the lowest since 2009, when Turnbull was last leader. The embattled Abbott’s personal approval rating is at a low of 24%.
64% of voters surveyed said that they preferred Malcolm Turnbull over Abbott as Prime Minister, and 59% said the same about Julie Bishop. When asked to chose between Turnbull and Bishop, results were 49% to 38% in favour of Turnbull.
Labor voters overwhelmingly support Turnbull over Abbott (there’s a shock), however, Liberal voters in the poll still overwhelmingly support Abbott, ranking Turnbull as the least popular of the three candidates.
The leadership spill is set to happen at 9am in the Liberal party room – you can go here for a breakdown of how it will play out.
